Kelly Link transforms the Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen into a modern telling of the tale. The story begins with Link using a 2nd person narrative to place the reader directly into the story. Link uses the form “you” as a female Gerda perspective, which I found interesting because it may draw heterosexual females into the romantic aspect of the story but I’m not sure if heterosexual males would be as interested in reading the story.
I also enjoyed how the storytelling itself was much more modern and there was a twist. Gerda decides not to kiss Kay, and leaves him with the Snow Queen to go off and travel on her own and be independent.
